I will update this thread as work continues.
Here is Angus when I bought him about 6mo. ago.
He started as a 75 Leyland 1000. Bought him for $2000. He had very little rust except for the back seat area. For my use I didnt need it out it went. He'll never be the same again...

Stripped him down and started cutting him up for the conversion. Gotta love the plasma cutter for quick work on metal. I will be cleaning it up as soon. Should be ready for the acid dip by next week. Then off she goes.

Engine has been torn down and internally everything replaced. Block painted and covers polished. Manifold and intake are polished as well just not on the engine yet. AC and power steering deleted.
Stay tuned more to come. Next its off to get acid dipped and coated then the subframe should be here and the fun begins.
Absolutely COOL!
MiniTec is getting ready to do one of these projects, too. I am very intrigued and look forward to your posted progress...probably not as much as you though!

Chris from Zcars sent me a copy of that DVD about 6 mo. ago. Ive watched it about 30 times already.
At the end of the CD they do some track time and prep. Its pretty crazy how fast they are.
I think Minitec is getting ready to build one for a customer. K20A powered! Yikes.

And some picts of the engine in the frame. Install was simple. This is a real quality kit everything in place. Just missing a couple of bolts that will be here this week then the test fit for the frame in the car will happen. The manifold is being made and the intercooler is on the way.

Z-cars does very nice work if you can afford it. I can't even count that high. Front suspension looks overkill; What is their thinking on that? It's gonna be a rocket!

Steve your stuff is very nice (that have seen) and I believe you are in the same ballpark in quality. But, this kit is designed more for track racing and thus I think they have designed the kit for that. The pieces that you have'nt seen are of the same quality and strength. This is a full roll cage car from front to rear that all ties into each other. The thinking on the front is that is is all easily adjustable without taking the wheels off for camber, castor and toe. Its pretty neat looking down into it and just seeing the rebound and hight adjustable shocks, gas tank and rad. And in my case a carbon nitrogen bottle (hint hint).

looks great; are the rear wheels moved back a few inches? How much space between the seat and front of the engine? curious about the weight distribution; do you have corner scales?
steve
05-02-2008, 07:09 PM
How 'bout a couple shots of the rear hub, with shock mount and swing arm attachment detail. does the track have to be that wide or is it just your wheel offsets?
Zmini
05-03-2008, 08:10 AM
Thanks guys for the compliments
Steve, the rear tires arent moved back I think its just the way the photo looks.
The seats sit about 8 inches in front of the engine.
I dont have corner scales but as soon as everything is in the car I will have it corner balanced so I should be able to tell you at that time.
I will try and get some picts for you of the rear hub assembly, shocks and mounts.
The rear offset is actually a bit more in these shots as the rear tires werent all the way mounted but the rear is about 1" wider than the front. But this is the offset I wanted, doesnt have to be that way.

Tavis,
You still looking for a build DVD for Zcars frame? No, I thought there was one for a regular type conventional set up somewhare that was out. I can't seam to find it. The good news is I might have found a possible canidate of a '63 Mini that started out as project but the owner has too many projects and the Missus is making him get rid of it for $2600!

steve
05-09-2008, 07:43 PM
Thanks for the pics. Can't see it all with the tape on, but It looks pretty good, Not exactly the way I would do the arms; the wheels look like they have space to come in about 3" a side. The bearing carriers look fabricated from large OD pipe or tubing; they must have a gang of people working over there.
Can't decide whether to go this K route on our next project, or stick with a Busa Middy. The K does have the more durable gear box with reverse and a diff built in; no chain/sprocket problems or special fabbed diff to deal with; but a 6 speed sequential shift box and monster revs are hard to say no to as well as about 150 to 200 pounds lighter, and we already have a couple Busa motors under the bench. :|
Zmini
05-10-2008, 09:56 AM
Steve,
Im in Ventura if you want a up close and personal look just let me know. Or we can get together when its done and you can have a test drive.
I originally did want to go the Busa way but the cost was a determining factor for me and as well I dont know anything about Busa motors. The VTEC kit in the long run was about $6000 less. I have friends that know a lot about Honda motors and the VTEC kit was much more complete. So thats the way I went. But I will do a Busa one at some point maybe yours if you have one available by then. :D
Not sure on the bearing carriers but I can tell you that they are from a Ford of some kind. Not sure which one though.
steve

Exhaust is done. Well kinda. I need help deciding what way to go here. I originally had the exhaust exiting the middle of the car but it sits about 2in. off the ground. So im thinking that a may re route it up and exit it out the left side in the middle of the boot. So about where you see the O2 bung on the downpipe. What do you think?

How about "C" notching the body to bring it up some? I think sticking out the boot lid would look odd.
rl48mini
06-05-2008, 10:04 AM
If it's sitting that low, I would look at running the pipe below the bumper and through the panel just below the seam. That could look very nice whether centered or at one side.

Are those rear arches going to smoothed in like the front?
Zmini

You mean like this one....Ya kinda just in carbon :P
http://www.audioprofiles.com/mini/50.jpg
No its pretty much like it is. The rear is soo wide that we shortened it a bit to be able to see the tires in the back. It actually looks like a Lambo from the back. Its not as square as it looks.

Ive had a bit of a setback in regards to timleyness cause Im working with a fabricator and unfortunately he's good, so he's busy. There was a couple of things that I couldnt do myself. But I have been assured that I should have the car back by the weekend then I will be going at a pretty fast clip after Xmas.
Yea if anybody wants a carbon roof I have one for sale. Instead of hacking up the first roof I decided just to have another one made custom with the roof scoop in it and sell this one. At some point someone will want one. So if you do.... PM or email me.

Sweet man.
I must say I'm a little surprised to hear you're putting a stereo, HIDs and carpet in this thing; I thought it was going to be a full out race car!
Looking forward to more pics of your progress.

Looking good; I would like to know how much it weighs when finished.
All I had left to do 3 months ago was finish up my wiring; I had a guy put a harness together for me but he quit mid way, and there it sets until I can find time to sort it myself.

After getting the car started, we found out the fuel pump had an internal short so I had to buy a A1000 Aeromotive pump, installed it. Then the water pipes under the car leaked........have to get those fixed. Then the custom rad. I had made leakes, have to send that back to the co. who made it. Other than that the car took home best of show ultimate unlimited at HIN. Bst of show vintage, best of show other and the people choice award.
As soon as I have the above fixed it will go on the dyno and get tuned. Then maybe another switch maybe not sure yet. Im thinking about dropping the engine and put in a fully built K24 build it up to a 700+ hp. We will see..... :mrblue: :mrblue: :mrblue: :mrblue:  could technically be the highest HP mini in the world.

Ya I plan on shooting some good shots of it ASAP. We just came down to the wire to get it to the show so I couldnt get any good ones. However as soon as it gets the rad back in it and pipes I plan on a little photo shoot for you guys. Maybe even a model for your viewing pleasure.

i would like to see some close up pixs of the shift linkage? did zed cars sell you this as part of the kit or did you make it?
Zmini
07-25-2009, 08:18 AM
Since mine is in the car its pretty hard to get a good shot but email Brian briancaulfield1@gmail.com he is the US rep for Zcars and I know he will have his kit here soon he can prob. give you better shots than I can.
My linkage is the one that came directly from Zcars the only thing I did was bend the shifter back some what to not hit my switch panel.

The wheels are real 3-pc Image Wheels out of the UK (customized of course), center lock and also available in standard lug patterns. The hubs are KAD.
