Anyone out there willing to sell/donate an HIF-6 to my 998 driver? Also, a decompression shim head gasket would be nice to have for the s/c upgrade ;)

Sounds good. It'll be used on an Automatic engine.

What have you done to the 998 to enable it to handle an HIF44?

Yeah, I believe the 44 is 1-3/4" (for bigger motors) A bit big for a 998, even boosted.

Z'actly, Steve. The single digit references are the number of 1/8's of an inch over 1 inch of throttle bore (!?). The two-digit references are mm.
So, HS4 is 1.5 inch; HS6 is, indeed 1.75". The "4", a 1-1/2" carb, is right for a 998. My cammed, flowed 1380 used an HIF44.
"s" means side-mounted float bowl and HIF, means Horizontal (air flow) Internal Float.
Sorry about the confusion created by my mental flatulence and the time it's been since I actually had an A series motor in the car. Mea culpa.

Now..as to proper size, an HIF44 is for a large bore (1275 and up) motor. Unless a naturally aspirated 998 is overbored, cammed and/or the head reworked, one would have fun getting it to run through all RPM ranges with a HS6/HIF44. It could require custom profiling the needle, not a task for the faint of heart or without a dyno(rolling road) handy. A specific quote is from Tim Mundy's column in the September 2009 MiniWorld; "Larger capacity road engines, from 1275s through 1380's and 1430's work well with a single HIF44, provided that not too wild a cam is fitted. The HIF44 is a good upgrade for tuned 998's with a modified large valve head."
I seem to recall that Calver has been a bit more blunt about the matter.

All that said for others that my read this thread, having decoded your comment about a decompression gasket and the refernce to "s/c", then yes, an HIF44 would be correct for a supercharged 998. Phew!

Just following the recommendations of Moss Motors. That will be a pull-through system, low restrictions, and can be leaned-out if needed.

The info I learned states, HIF44 and HIF6 are one in the same. HIF44 = 44mm, HIF6 = 6/8 or 3/4" PLUS 1".

N.J.- An HIF66 equates to 66mm or closes to 2-3/8". Sounds about right?

See edits above. Mea Culpa for my earlier mistatement of SU terminology.

Thanks for the good info. My mission continues. All I want is a little more power in a non-traditional manner.

The 66mm carb is 2-5/8" not 2-3/8"....... the same size as a B16 Honda throttle body, or enough to make 160 to 200 HP. Seems a bit much for a 1380 "A" series, even a full whack 140 HP specimen. I would guess that a 2" carb or HIF50.76 would do. :)

Good catch, Steve. Time zone difference caught me asleep at the keyboard!!! Mmmm, seems Classic Minis like BIG carbs. I guess, bigger is better. ;)
