View Full Version : How Many Valves?

Okay, I'm confused. First off, I admit I've never actually had the cover off of my motor to take a look inside. I had someone else (MiniTec) build the car for me. So I'm a car nut, but not a gear head, so sue me. Anyway, while on another forum, someone made the comment that #1, your car isn't a Mini. Okay, it's an Elf, not exactly apples and oranges, but red apples and yellow apples. Maybe. And #2, its not a 16V. So someone educate me. I thought that even the SOHC VTEC motors had 4 valves per cylinder (mine's a D16Z6). 4 valves times 4 cylinders, that was 16 when I went to school. Not that I particularly give a rat's nether regions, seems like a minor point to be an elitist about. But what's the real story? I can't seem to find any information online about the valve train specs of this particular motor. Don't make me take off the valve cover and count them. Anyone?

Red, More like red apples of two different varieties.
I think all modern Honda/Acura engines have 4 valve heads; can't think of any with just 2.

That's what I thought. Guess I'll have to go straighten out the wise guy on the 16VMini forum. Some people seem to think if it ain't got two cams it ain't s**t. Whatever.

Just remind them that a "D" is 80 lbs lighter and with proper parts and tuning can have the same HP as a stock "B"

Most people are pretty ignorant to the d series motors. They always assume they are worthless and not worth thinking about. As shown above, all but a few versions of the d are 16v. Its only the crx hf(d15b6) and civic cx(d15b8) that are 8 valve. Along with a few Vtec-e motors that operate 8 or 12v at low rpm and switch over to 16 in vtec. They are very stout little engines and respond very well to simple mods.
