View Full Version : Is There No One With A K Series?
Greetings!
Since I was the first customer of the K series subframe from Minitec I thought it appropriate I entered the first entry for the K series on Vtecminis.com.
I'm curious as to who owns one and how their conversion has gone for them, what issues they've run across...anyone out there?

how do you like yours, is it to much? Do you wish you had not lengthenged the nose? To heavy?
Uh, what was the middle thing?
1. Love it.
2. How much is too much? I met a guy who is building a 300 hp rear wheel drive z car with K20 power. Compared to him, I'm Mini Me.
3. Lengthened nose not an issue for me. Flip front coolness - ease of everyone else working on the car (not me) is appreciated.
4. Too heavy? Well compared to the motorcycle engine types, yes. Compared to a B series Honda and an A series, I think it's lighter. I added quite a bit of weight afterward with stereo package and backpack (approx 200 lbs). If the real question under that is, "Does the power and weight hurt performance in the straights and/or the auto X?" then the answer is unknown as of yet because I have yet to go to the track where claims often become fiction or disbelief becomes faith.
Any more questions? You in back with the lenghtened nose...
C'mon though, is there anyone else with a K series (Honda not Rover)?

really, i thought the K was heavier
im not really all that up to speed on the honda stuff as id like to be.
the flip front is still longer then standard isen't?
For clarity, I too am not like most of the wrenches around here as I seldom wash the car in case I get the soap mixture wrong. That qualification being made, I understood that the K is lighter BUT perhaps the frame is heavier or other things...don't know.
Yes, sir. The flip front is longer by about 4 inches as I have understood it.

I have one!
Well its ordered anyway.
Travis - your name implies you have small tires.
Seriously though, that's refreshing to hear someone actually has a K...I feel like I'm the only one in the world with one.
What made you chose the K variety?
What motor do you plan to use?
Which tranny?
How soon before you get the kit?
I would really like to see the progress photos so if you are willing it would be nice to post them.

My screen name is the same one I have had for years on MM. I should have gone by Travis 13 incher on here I guess.
I chose the K because its newer and also I was going with the flip front so I would be extended anyway so what the heck?
Kit should be here in about a month (Late Nov).
Not sure on trans. Leaving it up to BJ apparently. What do you have? Which is better for the mini?
I will be posting photos of the build in the build section of this site.

Hi guys, i'm putting the k series in my car. I have the kit, ect. at the house. I'm using the engine from a 2003-04 Acura RXS w/ 6 speed. I have all the cutting done except some holes for wiring. Am grinding and hope finish welding this weekend. I have put 13" wheels on several Mini's. With a 50 series tire, the outer dia. is not much different. Since my donor car has 10" wheels, and Cooper S disc brakes. I am going to try this setup with 205/50 tires first. If it makes my car turn too high RPM's cruising on the highway then I will switch to 13's. I am trying to do the cutting and welding without messing up my new paint job. I'm curious to know how much sound deading everyone is adding if any? Thanks, Mike.

To paraphrase the insurance ads...
You're in good hands with BJ and Norman.

Mike, ton of sound proofing - just about every nook and cranny plus thick insulation under the carpet. Hope yours is coming along.

Nice a 450hp rwd mini that should be fun

I had been running the K20A3 (supercharged though) and getting 26-40 with the stock final drive. In the next week or so I'll be running the type S (K20A2) with the type S tranny which has a different final drive and first gear; one more friendly to our wheel size. In a couple of months I hope to have the 3.47 final drive for the K. All to say that my mileage is likely to change.

Did you see the nice writeup hondata did on the A3 verse A2 http://www.hondata.com/techk20general.html
MiniK20: I'm in Nor-Cal...Sacramento region. Are you going to the Mini Mania open house / vtec experience on May 17th?
AJWatUC: No I hadn't read that before. Some of the information was given to me by others. I hopefully will have my car back any day now and can speak to the differences. Regrettably I think they mechanic changed the pulley on the supercharger so part of what I'll be experiencing won't be merely the change of heads. I probably should have just done one thing at a time to better feel the progress and advance of each part.
